RESUME Textile Art - Joy McAloon 2014

I was born in Perth Western Australia. In the last 20 years I have participated in various workshops from where I have gained experience in working with textiles and free hand machine embroidery.

When I was young, my Mother was always stitching, and using her sewing machine. By completing drafting courses, I felt qualified to make my own suits and gowns. My first sewing machine was a Singer, which I still have, but use Bernina now because it handles textured and thicker fabrics better.

Since 2000, I have been a member of the Embroiderers Guild of Western Australia and have completed Foundations of Embroidery. Even though this was a lot to do with hand embroidery techniques, I have been able to apply these to my contemporary work.

As I enjoy textile and art, I am also a member of a contemporary textile group, art society. About July 2010, I started Thread Magic group within the Embroiderers Guild. I was able to share my skills, teaching them textile art techniques, manipulating fabric and free hand machine embroidery. This group meets north of the river and the group has grown to 16 members and is flourishing. Over the last 8 years, I have won awards within the art society for my work and have entered my work in various exhibitions.

It is rewarding to share with others techniques in basic design, using colours, textiles, and get the best from our sewing machines and to encourage others to complete their projects.
